Manpages-nl

Where is it

What is this

This is an attempt to translate the GNU/Linux manpages to Dutch. It is oriented towards what the translator is interested in to translate, meaning at this point: Linux syscalls, heavily used console progs, libC calls. Hopefully other people will join to create a wider base for the project, and help improving quality.

What is the status of this attempt

Currently (Sun Feb 11 13:25:55 PST 2001) a total of 112 manpages are translated:

                 30 man(1) pages: 17 man, 13 help2man.
                 80 man(2) pages
                    man(3) pages
                    man(4) pages
                    man(5) pages
                  1 man(6) pages
                    man(7) pages
                  1 man(8) pages

Translation style

Maybe you wonder why some English words remain in the Dutch text, like

               `directory' (map?),
                  `socket' (stopcontact?),
                `terminal' (eindstation?),
               `mount(en)' (bevestigen?),
                  `string' (snoer?),
                    `mode' (toestand?)
               `interface' (toegangsdefinities?).
	                   etc..

The reason behind this is that the English words are the standard. If these words were translated to Dutch it could turn out to be very confusing for someone new to GNU/Linux, especially when he has to read some English documents, something that can't be avoided.

Join?

If someone feels like translating a man page, he/she may safely email that page to the list (see 'Getting in touch' below).

It doesn't really matter which manpage from what section you translate, as long is it isn't translated already.

Getting in touch

Post bug reports (typos and up), translated manpages, etc. to manpages-nl@nl.linux.org. To subscribe to this list, mail to Majordomo@nl.linux.org and put `subscribe manpages-nl` in the body.

Licensing etc

Every manpage is distributed under their original copyright. Therefore this package has not one but many copyrights on its contents. What's left lies under the GPL.

For your further amusement

Other translations to other languages can be accessed through here.

The free Internet magazine Linux Focus has articles translated into many languages, also an article about the installation of manpages-nl is available (Dutch version of article).
