Introduction

  XWine is a graphical user interface for the wine emulator.
You can configure and run Ms-Windows applications (Ms Dos, Windows 3.x or Win32).

XWines's functions:
  • Wine's Configuration.
  • Configuration and management of Ms-Windows Applications/li>

Installation

  Libraries that you need:
  • GTK
  • Gnome
  • db1

Software that you need:
  • Wine : XWine is a graphical user interface for wine ;-)
  • A WEB Navigator : it's your il help navigator

XWine installation
  1. Go into XWine directory:
    $ cd XWine-x.x (x.x is the XWine version)
  2. launch the XWine configuration:
    $ ./configure
  3. launch the XWine compilation:
    $ make
  4. You have to logon as root:
    $ su
  5. Install XWine:
    # make install
For more information you can read the file INSTALL given with the XWine-x.x.tar.gz archive.

Run XWine
  • Type the next command:
    $ xwine

Menu

  The Start menu:

Programs : To launch Windows Software that are configured
Configure : Wine and Software configuration
Help : To see Help and FAQ
Run : To launch Windows Software
Quit : Exit from XWine

The Help menu:

About : To see the about box of XWine

The Programs menu:
 
Programs
List : To launch Windows Software that are configured
Wine : To launch wine utilities (need to install wine-utils)
Calculator : Display a calculator
Editor : Display a small editor
Reset : To kill the wineserver's socket

The Configuration menu:
 
Configuration
Install : To configure an Ms-Windows Software
See the Log file : Display the log file
Configure Wine : Show the Wine Configuration Panel
Properties : To configure XWine's properties

The Help menu:
 
Help
FAQ : To see the frequently asked questions
Manual : To see this User Guide
About : To see the about box of XWine

Wine Configuration

  XWine allows you to configure Wine by graphical menus:

Windows Version
Here you set the Windows version to emule.

Drive Configuration
You can add, modify or delete drives for wine.

System Directories
Here you define where are the Windows directories. You define the PATH variable.

DLLs Override
You define here which DLL you wnat to use (Windows DLL or Wine DLL).

Look & Feel
You can configure the Look of wine (Windows 3.1,95 or 98). You configure the system's fonts too.

X11 Configuration
You can configure if your wine application has to be launched in a desktop, be managed or not by XFree. You can configure Direct Draw too.

Ports Configuration
You can configure parallel and serial ports. You can also configure your printer.

Registry Configuration
Here, you configure where whine has to find the Windows Registry informations.

Console Configuration de la Console
You can specify the Terminal progame that Wine will use.

Multimedia Configuration
Here you specify the sound, wave and midi drivers.

Run winesetuptk
If you have winestuptk, you can run it by this menu.

Configuration file
You can also edit the Wine Config file here.

Configure an Application

  Configure an application
  1. Go to the Managing Application Window:
    clic Start>Configuration>Install
  2. You can create, modify or delete an application configuration:
    clic on New We want to configure a new Application.
  3. You can now configure the application:
    Title : Titre de l'application.
    Run : Software to launch (you can select it with the explorer: button "...")
    Use a CD-Rom : If selected, XWine ask you to insert the CD-Rom before running the program.
    Need params : If the software need params.
    Win Version : You can choose the windows version (win95,winNT,...)
    Emule MS-Dos : If it's a Ms-Dos program
    Icon : You can choose an icon
  4. With the DLLs and X11drv you can configure wine for the specific application:
    - DLLs Override configuration
    - X11 configuration
  5. Now you have to save the configuration:
    clic on OK
  6. Now you can run the software:
    clic Start>Programs>List
  7. You can also create an icon on the KDE and Gnome Desktop:
    clic on Start>Configuration>Install then on <Desktop>

Install a new Software
  1. Run the setup or install program on CD-Rom:
    clic Start>Run
  2. When the software is installed, you need to test if it works. clic Start>Run
  3. Configure the application:
    clic Start>Configuration>Install
  4. Test the configuration:
    clic Start>Programs>List

Run an Application

  Run an Application which is configured
  1. Go to the software list:
    clic Start>Programs>List
  2. Select the software
  3. Launch it:
    clic on Run

Run others applications
If you want to run a setup program or verify if a software works before configure it.
  1. Display the "Run" window:
    clic Start>Runr
  2. Type the line command or select it with the explorer
    clic button "..." To display the explorer
  3. Launch it:
    clic on button OK

Managing Applications

  The Log file
  Every thing that is done by XWine is written in a file log, you can see it:
clic Start>Configuration>See Log file.

Contents of file:
  • All things done by Xine
  • All message from the wine emulator
When you quit XWine you can save or delete the log file.

When you have some problems you should see this file it can help you.
You can print the log file : clic on button <Print>.

The Task bar
  You can stop a software that doesn't work correctly by clicking on Kill.
The Refresh button is used to refresh the task bar.

The Reset button
  When a software crashes down it may lock the wineserver socket, so you can destroy it : Start>Programs>Reset.
When you kill an application you should use it.
